Back in issue 2 of iDrum, we were
lucky enough to have Tim Porter
and Dil Davies come in to the studio
to demonstrate their silent tactile
monitoring system, the BC2. Since
then, the product has been snapped up
by a list of professional drummers that
seems to be growing by the second,
not only for the BC2 but for the
newer, slicker model, the BC Gigster.
Plug In & Play
The Gigster is a third of the weight of the
BC2, making it more streamline and easy to
pack and transport between gigs. Designed
to provide a completely adjustable personal
monitoring system for your bass drum (and
the rest of your kit if you’re running through
a monitor desk), the Gigster reduces onstage
noise and does away with any latency issues
that can occur. The signal travels from your
bass drum microphone through the unit and
into the drum throne, which vibrates and
uses bone conduction to send the signal to
your head when a note is played. It works
instantly and so effectively; even at a very

low setting, you can feel more in tune with
yourself.
The engine itself is so simple to use, it really
is a case of plug in and play. Beautifully
designed and ergonomic, setting adjustments
are obvious and tactile. A low contour knob
adjusts the level of bass in the signal to the
seat and the master volume increases drive to
the seat. A VMT protection device is there to
make sure that the seat won’t be overdriven
and damaged during play; there is not a lot
that you can throw at this thing that it can’t
handle.
The Gigster is responsive to all adjustments
that you make to your bass drum sound -
beater, heads, technique and dampening
- authentically reflecting the sound in the
length and frequency of the signal sent to the
throne top. It’s worth mentioning that the
Gigster can also be used incredibly effectively
as a monitoring system for electronic drums.
But as the output levels of these kits vary
considerably, do check the Porter & Davies
website for more advice on how to adapt
your set-up.
