REVIEWS_PEARL VISION BIRCH ARTISAN v
Pearl Export was, for almost 20 years,
the number one selling drum kit in
the world. It represented a perfect
balance between quality and economy
and for thousands of drummers
around the world, at all skill levels, it
saw them through from beginner to
serious player. Vision takes the finest
elements from the Export series and
improves on them, making it a kit not
to be ignored, particularly when you
have a limited edition set such as this.
Construction
The Pearl Vision Birch Artisan kit, or VBA,
is the first of three Vision kits up for review
over the coming months here at iDrum. The
‘A’ refers to Artisan II, the limited edition
graphic finish, and this one is the rather
unique Starry Nights wrap, of which there
are 150 available in Europe only.
The shells are birch ply, which means that
the inner and outer plies are birch wood.
Six plies in total make up the 7.5mm shells
all around the kit, with this particular
configuration including a 22x18” un-drilled

bass drum, 10x7” and 12x8” toms, 14x12”
and 16x14” floor toms and a matching birch
ply snare drum. All shells are constructed
following Pearl’s SST - Superior Shell
Technology.
The two short toms are mounted with the
ISS, Integrated Suspension System, which
hooks on to the hoop of the tom and receives
the bar from the Uni-Lock tom holder that
attaches to your cymbal stands conveniently
and leaves tonnes of room for manoeuvre.
Chrome triple-flanged hoops and Referencestyle
bridge lugs are featured around the kit
as well as Reference-style floor tom legs and
brackets, which is a bonus.
A nice touch with this kit is that it comes
complete with Remo UT heads - Pinstripes
on the toms, Coated snare batter and
PowerStroke3 bass drum head – which are
easy to tune and stay put once the desired
pitch is reached. The bass drum’s matching
hoops are held in place with the recessed
claws with rubber lining, very tidily linking
everything together.
